LawWorks Luncheon Highlights
"We do it for the youth..." was a recurring sentiment expressed by participants when they shared their perspectives on the Center for Youth Citizenship's (CYC) LawWorks Partnerships and their involvement with high school law education programs at the December 9, 2009, LawWorks Luncheon. The annual luncheon kicks-off the legal community's involvement in the 2009-2010 Gordon D. Schaber (GDS) High School Law Program's Mock Trial and Moot Court Competition Events as well as Sacramento Youth Court. Guests included lawyers, judges, law enforcement officers, educators and student leaders, who joined the Center to recognize and thank sponsors and volunteers for their contributions to these valuable programs that teach youth about the rule of law, the judicial system, and good citizenship.
Get Involved & Volunteer for the High School Law Program
"As a former moot court coach and as a volunteer judge, I whole heartedly can commend to you the value of your participation in the Gordon D. Schaber Moot Court and Mock Trial Competition. While coaching is a large time commitment, serving as a judge only takes a few hours. In that time, you will not only provide needed judging for the competition, but you will also have the opportunity to observe and be part of the next generation's development as citizens. Volunteering as a judge always leaves me optimistic and excited about the capacity and future of our local young people.
Please take the time to sign up for a judging slot in January for either moot court or mock trial (or both!). You won't regret it! Also, if you or your firm has not yet contributed to this program, please do so. Together we can ensure that this worthy program continues this year and in the future."

"Character education and social responsibility - Can schools fill in what the culture leaves out?"
By: Marsha Boutelle Published: November 16, 2009
“We try to take the definition of character education out of the abstract,” says Rhonda Sato, CYC’s acting executive director. “In the early days, people thought of it more as a movement than an approach. We think of it as character-based citizenship; it’s all about students being good everyday citizens.”
