Celebrating character and good citizenship through film, arts and community dialogue, this annual forum will draw over 900 citizens of all ages together to recognize recipients of our "Highest Office: Citizen Award." This year's event will feature educator Erin Gruwell, whose story is the inspiration for the film "Freedom Writers," who will speak about how she helped change the lives of her students by encouraging them to question long-held racial stereotypes, address their deepest struggles, and ultimately rechart their futures.

In addition, CYC will recognize Charles Mack Elementary, Prairie Elementary, and Orinda Intermediate School as the 2007 California Schools of Character. The annual California Schools of Character awards program recognizes schools or districts that demonstrate an outstanding character education initiative that yields positive results in student behavior, school climate, and academic performance.
