The 29th Annual Gordon D. Schaber (GDS) High School
Law Program involved over 600 students from 28 local high schools
in the Placer/Sacramento/Yolo Tri-County region. In addition, more
than 200 judicial officers, legal professionals, and educators contributed
their time, energy, and enthusiasm to make this annual event possible.
The 2007-08 Moot Court case, Notalianou vs. The City of Pacific,
offered students the opportunity to examine, critically analyze,
and engage in a respectful dialog about the 1st and 14th Amendments
of the U.S. Constitution and the current gang injunction debate.
Participating youth gain an understanding of the impact of
gangs and youth violence on our communities, the rule of law, various
community perspectives, and the role of law enforcement, government
agencies, the courts and everyday citizenship.
The Mock Trial case, People v. Palmer, presented youth with a first
degree murder case which featured a pretrial argument regarding
admissibility of scientific evidence in a criminal trial. Participating
students portrayed the roles of pretrial counsel, prosecuting or
defense attorneys, witnesses, court clerks, bailiffs, and jurors.
