Reaching Resolution
Sacramento County Program
Each fall CYC selects 20 schools from Sacramento County to participate
in the Reaching Resolution Countywide Program. The primary goal
is to develop effective student mediators that can provide ongoing
conflict resolution services to their peers and help to create safer
classrooms, schools and communities. The skills that students gain
by participating in conflict resolution programs are also skills
that are essential in their role both as student leaders today and
as adult leaders in the communities of tomorrow. The components
of the yearlong program include:
- Site Coordinator training: Site Coordinators and administrators
attend a two-day intensive training that focuses on developing
communication skills, the “nuts and bolts” for implementing
and expanding school site conflict resolution programs, and includes
a resource binder and training video.
- Youth Leadership Camp: Each fall CYC hosts and conducts an annual
Youth Leadership Camp for high school and middle school students
in the Reaching Resolution program. Through the Camp’s dynamic,
hands-on training activities, students gain skills in the areas
of communication, conflict resolution & peer mediation, problem
solving & decision making, diversity awareness, teambuilding,
collaboration, and planning. In the process, students also learn
how these skills can develop their leadership abilities and impact
not only themselves but also their peers, schools, and communities
as well.
Throughout the weekend, students also have an opportunity to interact
with various community leaders to gain an understanding of the
“real-world” applications for their enhanced skills.
With a trainer-of-trainers approach and an emphasis on teamwork,
the Camp is beneficial for schools that either currently have
a student conflict resolution program in place, or for schools
that would like to implement one for the first time. After camp,
student leaders return to their schools, homes and communities
having acquired valuable lifelong skills, knowledge and attitudes
that equip them to create positive alternatives to conflict and
violence.
- Leadership and Site Coordinator Meetings: Middle and High school
students and all site coordinators attend three quarterly meetings
to continue adding skills to their “tool box.” At
these meetings, students receive training in areas such as diversity,
sexual harassment, anger management and school/law enforcement
partnerships.
The culmination of the program is the annual
Reaching Resolution Showcase event.
