The Center For Youth Citizenship’s
6th annual Character Education Symposium

Bringing Respect, Responsibility & Trustworthiness to Student Achievement

Sacramento County Office of Education
March 24, 2004

The Symposium’s purpose was to promote the effective and research proven use of character education in California schools. The California Partnership for Character Education (CPCE) supported this conference and other projects to achieve its goal of developing and implementing a systematic approach for K-12 Schools. This year’s emphasis was on the elementary school level and the integration of character into the core curriculum. Participants also learned about a model approach for grades K-6 as well as applications for grades 7-12.

Over 75 members of the education, government and business communities attended this year’s day-long symposium, including the CPCE Free to Learn project school leadership teams. The Center for Youth Citizenship (CYC) was pleased to host Mary Jane Pearson, Secretary’s Regional Representative, U.S. Department of Education, as the opening plenary session speaker. Featured panelists in the Luncheon Community Connections Panel included Lawrence Brown, First Assistant United States Attorney, United States Attorney’s Office – Eastern District; Ron Comings, News Director, News 10; and Pollyanna Cooper-LeVangie, Board Member, EGUSD. CYC Trainers Tim Dakin and Ken Hawkins conducted the workshops Leading With Character and A Matter of Culture respectively.
