2007 California Schools of Character

Charles Mack Elementary
Located in Elk Grove Unified School District, in Sacramento County,
Charles Mack Elementary is a diverse school with 16 different languages
spoken by its students. The character education initiative at Charles
Mack aims to give all students the skills they need to increase
their emotional intelligence along with their academic intelligence.
As a result of their hard work, they are happy to report a reduction
in suspensions of 50% over the past year, and in increase in their
API score from 2005 to 2006 of 42 points!

Prairie Elementary
Located in Elk Grove Unified School District, in Sacramento County,
Prairie Elementary accepts responsibility to provide a positive,
purposeful and orderly climate, where teaching and learning are
first priority. Consequently, Prairie enjoys a well-deserved reputation
as a learning community that values a strong academic focus and
great character.

Orinda Intermediate School
Located in Orinda Union School District, in Contra Costa County,
Orinda Intermediate School serves the city’s entire middle
school population for students in grades six through eight. The
goal of their character education program is to develop programs
and strategies to help students learn to respect themselves and
others, to value differences, and to interact with people in positive,
considerate, and healthy ways. It is their mission to promote self-reliance
and to foster a conviction that Orinda Intermediate School is more
than an academic environment.
